Turn on a timer in a chat, and messages are deleted for both of you once the time is up. Attached files are deleted from the server too.
Open a chat, then the menu → Disappearing messages. Choose 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day or 1 week, or turn it off.
Each chat has its own timer. Either of you can change it; the other person’s app applies the change and shows a line in the chat.
A message disappears when the chosen time has passed since it was sent, whether it was read or not. When you turn the timer on, older messages that are already past that time are deleted too.
Each app deletes expired messages on its own and remembers they were deleted, so they don’t come back.
Photos, videos, voice notes and documents in those messages are deleted from the server by whichever phone gets there first.
A message that is waiting for delivery stays in the server queue as ciphertext until it expires, for 30 days at most. The server can’t read it.
Disappearing messages work in one-to-one chats.
Someone can photograph the screen or copy the text before the time runs out. A modified copy of the app could keep messages.
The timer can be changed in chats included in your plan: with your free contacts, or with anyone on Umbera Premium.
